R22 Refrigerant Gas and Phase Out

R22 is a refrigerant gas widely used in older air conditioning and refrigeration systems. On the 1st of January 2015 it became illegal to use R22 in the servicing of all air conditioning and refrigeration systems. 

This was brought into force because R22 is extremely depleting to the ozone layer and therefore we no longer want to be using it. What it means in reality, is that anyone who has an air conditioning or refrigeration system containing R22 refrigerant, is allowed to still use the system for as long as they like. However if the refrigerant in the system needs to be removed or replaced this cannot be done, as it is now illegal. 

There are options of what can be done. People who have a number of systems with R22 in and rely on those systems should have a plan of action for the future.
